This is an ambitious 1968 compilation devoted to Mullan’s life, the construction of his military road, surviving portions of the route, and stories associated with the people and places along it. Compiled by B. C. Payette, the book combines biography, road history, route observations, and regional accounts in a substantial 504-page volume.

The book is especially valuable because Coleman and Rieman recorded the Mullan Road as it was understood and observed during the mid-twentieth century, when additional traces, landmarks, and local memories still survived. Although some of its conclusions should be checked against more recent scholarship, it remains an important early reference and a useful record of Mullan Road history before later development erased more of the original route.
