This is an overview of America’s National Trails System, established by Congress in 1968 to preserve significant natural landscapes, historic routes, and recreational pathways. This page explains the system’s three principal categories—national scenic trails, national historic trails, and national recreation trails—and the National Park Service’s efforts to develop, maintain, protect, and expand public access to these trails.
