John Mullan wrote extensively about the construction and use of the road. Three of his works follow: 1) His report of 1861 consists of many field notes in the form of letters, written by Mullan and others -- but mainly Mullan. We provide here a link to the full text at the University of Michigan, and also a document summarizing each letter. 2) The report of 1863. This was the official report on the project as a whole, which was completed in 1862. We have published here all of the text up to page 183, after which the report consists of a long sequence of charts. We have also included an audible version of the first 63 pages of the text, in which Mullan describes the actual building of the road. 3) The third document, the Miner's Guide, is a book he published in 1875 in which he repeats some of the materials the 1863 report and provides further thoughts on the geography, culture, and native life of the Northwest. 4) Finally, the essay, "Precision and Poetry: the Utility and Elegance of the Mullan Report" is included here because it is about the 1863 report.
