Long before John Mullan became known for building the military wagon road that bears his name, he played an important role in the northern transcontinental railroad surveys of the 1850s. This account describes Mullan’s explorations in western Montana and highlights the skill, determination, and firsthand knowledge of the region that would later shape his work on the Mullan Road.
